    Eleanor Levine Muses: NYC! 1995! Flea Markets!

    I sold CDs in the 1990s along Sullivan Street in Manhattan, at the corner of Houston, where I
    conversed quietly with David Byrne of the Talking Heads while viewing the Christmas scene
    on display at the Catholic church behind us. Mr. Byrne was jubilant because I didn’t know who he
    was (my musical knowledge, then, and perhaps now, is inferior to, let’s say, my knowledge of
    Victorian literature). DB loved being treated like a normal, anonymous human being. I suppose
    this is play acting for the rich and famous. In addition, Mr. Byrne and I agreed that the church’s
    Nativity scene—a few feet from where I normally sold CDs—was magnificent.

    I also worked at the flea market on Grand Street, at the corner of Broadway in Chinatown, where
    large African dudes argued with lesbian South Americans who sold photos; and an insane

    Iris Records has always sold 45s, but not that well and almost subconsciously, secretly, without direction. I mean, the pesky suckers come with every collection, even just one or two stuffed inside of an album jacket. In the early days of Iris, shopping carts full of records would appear at our door from all of the surrounding neighborhoods, and plenty of them were 45s without jackets and I would just throw them away (!?!). God knows what I discarded. Later on I dealt with obnoxious British dealers who were always convinced that I was hiding 7″ stuff from them, and then there were dudes from the WFMU record fair (pre-armory days) who would shock and awe me by paying $5.00 for this 45 soul and $10.00 for that rock one (yes, I was a bit naive).
