It’s been a while since Lupe Fiasco has put out a truly remarkable album worth talking about. His first two records, Lupe Fiasco’s Food and Liquor, and The Cool, are considered by many to be modern classics. However, the Chicago rapper’s critical success declined with his next two records, the pop-fueled Lasers and the boldly-titled Food and Liquor 2: The Great American Rap Album, Part 1.
This new record, Tetsuo and Youth, was initially intended to be the second part of his last record, but ended up being re-titled and displaying technical skills and hard-hitting instrumentals unheard of from Lupe for some time now. The album’s first song “Mural” is a 9-minute monster, with Fiasco unrelentingly spitting bar after bar for the track’s duration. Further highlights include the introspective “Prisoner 1 & 2”, and the 10-minute posse cut “Chopper”.
